NGOs are a relatively new concept in China. For the past 20 years, there have been a limited number of government affiliated bodies that fulfil part of the role of a traditional NGO- the so-called ‘Government Organised Non-Governmental Organisations’ (GONGOs). Chinese grassroots NGOs are however starting to emerge, despite their difficulties when registering or seeking official recognition.
