A programme, born out of a growing demand for green building materials in China is about to be applied to the textile industry.
Beijing-based GIGA: Green Ideas Green Actions was officially launched in April 2008, shortly after Asia's first carbon neutral hotel, URBN was built in Shanghai, an event that created a huge buzz for green materials, service providers and solutions.
At the time, information in China was (and still is) highly fragmented, lacking consistent standards and relevant data for reference on sustainable raw materials. So apparent was this lack of coherent information, GIGA was created by A00 Architecture, with founders such as industry veterans Ryan Dick and Dr. Michael Braungart of EPEA International Umweltforschung s an informal, open-source database of these materials.
