HO CHI MINH – Poor levels of occupational health and safety, and excessive overtime that exceeds legal limits remain "persistent challenges" in the Vietnamese garment manufacturing sector. Yet wages in the sector are expected to rise by 15 per cent in 2015 as the county's textile industry continues to prove a magnet to investors from the likes of Hong Kong, Taiwan and China.

These are just some of the findings of our research into Vietnam, which is being carried out as part of the new Sustainable Sourcing Map report being produced by MCL Global.

The new report, which also looks at environmental issues in the Vietnamese textile industry found that a recent report by Vietnam's Department of Natural Resources and Environment looking at Ho Chi Minh City discovered industrial parks in the city were discharging 6,700 tons of solid waste each day. Of this, almost 2,000 tons of are industrial toxins.
