WAKEFIELD - A leading authority on global supply chains has highlighted the huge challenges faced by brands seeking to support ethical trade in the garment industry in the wake of this weekend's reports that feminist T-shirts worn by UK MPs Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Harriet Harman had actually been made in sweatshop conditions by women in Mauritius being paid just 62p an hour. Tony Hines of Manchester University, who teaches executive programmes and international masters courses in supply chain management and has had several acclaimed books published on supply chain management, told us: "This unfortunate episode ... highlights the reputational risk of brands sourcing in low labour cost countries while earning high profits in developed markets maintaining high prices."
