UK organic textiles market consolidates

Written by Brett Mathews

BRISTOL - The latest Annual Organic Market report by the Soil Association paints a mixed picture for the UK's organic textiles market, with the total turnover of Soil Association-certified organic textiles up 3.4 per cent from 2013-2014 to £18.6m. This represents a significant decline in growth, with SA certified organic textile sales having jumped 36 per cent between 2012 and 2013. Soil Association Certification is the UK's certifier of organic products to Global Organic Textiles Standards (GOTS). The number of GOTS accredited textile facilities internationally reached 3,085 at the end of 2013, up 3 per cent on the previous year. UK organic wool production fell from 2013–14, down 17 per cent to 118,699kg. Wool prices decreased by 16 per cent to £1.02/kg.
