TOKYO – Fastening solutions manufacturer YKK has entered into a licensing agreement with US innovator Green Theme Technologies (GTT), and will start using the firm’s Empel water protection treatment across its portfolio of sustainably-made zippers.

Empel uses thermal curing to treat fabric through a heated zone which causes molecular bonding and polymerisation to occur without using chemicals.

Mike Maekawa, category manager at YKK Global Marketing Group, said: “This technology will allow us to create a new generation of water protective zippers that perform better, have better flexibility, and are more sustainable. It is game changing technology for high performance zippers.”
