CSR Asia's Poland Li reports about the following story – taken from the Chinese press – which raises some interesting and important questions relating to the protection of workers’ rights in China.

Mr Fang, 32, worked in Ningbo (a city in Zhejiang province). He had learnt to sew before graduating from middle school, and then led the life of an ordinary worker after graduation. But a lawsuit changed everything for him. In November 2004, he was fired by a well known garment company in Ningbo for having “organised and joined a strike”. Mr Fang believed this was unfair since all he did was initiate a talk with the governor. Therefore, he filed a case in court although he had little knowledge about the law.
