HONG KONG – Sustainable fashion charity Redressed has launched its 365 Challenge with partner Friends of the Earth HK, which aims to draw attention to the amount of textiles dumped in landfill in Hong Kong. Founder of the sustainable fashion NGO Christina Dean, has said she will wear dumped, donated or discarded outfits sourced from clothing bins for one year to highlight the unnecessary waste.
Environmental Protection Department figures state that an average of 217 tonnes of textiles was dumped in Hong Kong each day in 2011. In the same year in the UK, approximately 959 tonnes of clothing entered landfill, according to WRAP statistics.
Christina said: “I’m shocked at what we’ve salvaged from the clothing bins so far. From bags to bras, we’ve found that the public are chucking out amazing branded, quality clothes, some with their price tag still on. With today’s fashion production and consumption spiraling out of control, we must educate and inspire the public to rethink the way we consume, wear and discard our valuable clothes,” she added.
Redress works with designers, manufacturers and retailers to promote environmental sustainability in Asia’s fashion industry by reducing textile waste, pollution, and energy and water consumption.
Each month, stylists supporting the Redress campaign will release consumer guides on clothing care, repair and considered shopping.
Redress encourages the public to join in with the challenge and share their recycled, restyled or repaired outfits on Instagram using #365challenge.
