Trade benefit conflict for Bangladesh

Written by Stacey Dove

Bangladesh has faced conflicting action from two of its major importers, the European Union and the United States, linked to the Rana Plaza building collapse which killed more than 1100 workers, with the US suspending trade benefits for the country, whilst the European Union has encouraged buyers and retailers to “remain engaged and work with the EU and Bangladesh to support and promote socially responsible supply chains.”

So is the US trade benefits suspension a helpful push to encourage improved labour and safety standards in Bangladesh textile factories, or a loss of influence to make change for garment workers?
