STOCKHOLM - KEMI, the Swedish chemicals agency, claims current measures to reduce the use of four phthalates currently listed on Annex XIV of REACH - DEHP, DBP, BBP and DIBP – do not go far enough and is calling for further rules at EU and national levels to restrict their usage even more. Annex XIV of REACH, more commonly known as the Authorisation List, classifies the most harmful chemicals as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). KEMI is pushing for restrictions in REACH of the four phthalates in a number of article groups, including accessories such as gloves and bags as well as clothing and shoes. KEMI claims there are now "affordable alternatives" for many phthalates.
