LONDON - Sustainable cotton consultancy Cotton Connect is calling on brands and retailers to help "secure the cotton supply" in China by supporting the country's farmers which are facing plunging prices due to China's cotton reserve policy. China's government recently removed its cotton reserve policy, which sees it purchase, hold and sell cotton supplies, and this has exacerbated a problem which has seen the price of cotton drop by more than 25 per cent in the past few months, leaving cotton farmers the world over struggling to earn a living. CottonConnect says the shifting cotton market in China offers an opportunity for international companies to invest and build a more resilient cotton supply in China. However, our sustainable cotton expert Simon Ferrigno questioned why brands should be asked to repair the damage of policies which were used by China to deliberately manipulate the market.
