STOCKHOLM – A major European research project which is in the process of exploring alternatives to perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) in textiles, has discovered what has been described as a “cocktail of everything from C4 chemistry upwards", including 'C8' related contaminants on garments which brands believed had only been treated with C6-based chemistry. These trace contaminants include levels of PFOA and PFOS on some garments that exceed current restrictions, and the report also raises questions about the safety of alternative PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR) treatments including silicones, paraffins and dendrimer-based finishes.
