HAWASSA – Researchers in Ethiopia have uncovered "frightening" values for chemicals found in textile effluent being released into local waterways by one of the country's leading textile factories – and claim the pollution load being discharged by the factory represents a significant threat to the local environment. Ethiopia is currently on the radar of several leading international apparel brands seeking out the next low cost sourcing destination. For example, H&M already has five production units in the country, with Tesco, George at Asda and Primark also reported to be sourcing from the region – although the report does not specifically link these retialers with the offending textile mill.
