OHIO - Douglas Tompkins, the apparel entrepreneur turned environmental activist, has died after falling into near-freezing waters in a kayak accident in southern Chile. Tompkins, 72, co-founded and ran two clothing companies: outdoor clothing company The North Face; and, with his then-wife Susie, the Esprit clothing company.
