KYOTO – The discovery in Japan of bacteria that can digest polyester has big implications for the recycling of PET plastics if these bugs can be genetically modified to break down plastics on an industrial scale. This question was also the subject of a recent €250,000 Global Change Award funded by the H&M Conscious Foundation and given to US start-up Ambercycle Inc., which is developing a very similar way to break down plastics with bacteria.
