WASHINGTON – The US Senate has approved a major overhaul of the 40-year old Toxic Substances Control Act which will require new testing and regulation for thousands of chemicals in everyday consumer products such as textiles and clothing. Yet critics say the new legislation – expected to be signed off by President Obama shortly – cedes too much to chemical companies, and environmental testing and assessment is expected to take many years to complete.
