LONDON – Ongoing research from UK luxury brand Burberry has raised some interesting questions about whether or not the implementation of a manufacturing restricted substances list (MRSL) can actually help to reduce and eliminate chemicals of concern from textile supply chains to any notable degree. The company conducted chemical input screening tests on formulations at 12 of its wet processing facilities and found that 94 per cent of the chemical groups identified in the incoming water at these suppliers were also detected in the untreated effluent water. The study, which is not yet complete, has also found that other sources of contamination such as incoming raw materials could also limit the impact of using MRSLs on wastewater.
