LJUBLJANA – Scientists have shown for the first time that the ingestion of polyester textile microfibres can prove fatal to freshwater zooplankton – an integral part of the early-stage food chain for many different aquatic species. This research backs up other reports published in the latest edition of Ecotextile News magazine that show how oceanic synthetic textile microfibres can also accumulate hazardous pollutants, which adsorb to their large, fibrous surface areas.
