EDINBURGH – The rise and fall of black gold, a white paper put forward by research company Wood Mackenzie has raised questions about the textile industry’s role in future global oil consumption. Chemicals, such as those frequently used in the textile supply chain, have been forecast to account for nearly 20 per cent of global oil demand by 2035 – the year it earmarks as the point of peak oil demand.
Moving away from typical primary concerns such as the fuel used in the transport sector, and with an increased consumption from developing nations – many of which are considered ‘textile hubs’ – the textile sector faces questions over its oil usage in the coming years.
