DHAKA – Following on from December which saw yet another delay in proceedings regarding the future of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, new research has pointed to a substantial drop in the number of workplace fatalities within the nation’s garment sector.

The number of garment workers in Bangladesh to have died in factories over the past twelve months is said to have almost halved compared to the year prior – a statistic which may serve to strengthen calls for an extension to the Bangladesh Accord’s work.

This comes as the nation’s general election has yielded a disputed landslide victory, with some alleging intimidation of voters. With the government playing an integral role in deciding the fate of the Accord and safety regulation as a whole, how the political situation is eventually resolved could be key to the future wellbeing of several million garment millions.
