WORTHING – A local council in the UK has published figures on the financial loss caused by residents sending unwanted clothing to landfill rather than attempting to resell or recycle the garments.
The volume of used textiles binned by residents of Adur and Worthing in the south of England is said to have cost local taxpayers more than £462,000 last year – a figure which puts into perspective the size of the problem at both a national and global scale.
The case also highlights the vital work required to educate the public on both how to recycle or reuse apparel, and the reasons why this is so important for the future of the environment.
