DHAKA – Bangladeshi textile expert Mostafiz Uddin has suggested a ‘water tax’ be implemented throughout its native apparel sector to rein in levels of overconsumption and fund the scaling and adoption of water-saving technologies across industry.

Uddin, managing director of Denim Expert Ltd., pitched the potential solution in an article which served to highlight the extent of water usage, with wet processing and textile dyeing recognised as just two stages within the supply chain that utilise thousands of litres of water at a time.

It’s thought that by imposing a tax on the final garment, the environmental cost of clothes manufacture could be “shared across the supply chain” and not placed solely on the shoulders of manufacturers.
