XINJIANG – Fashion brand Target and Australian retailer Cotton On have opened investigations into suppliers in Xinjiang, China, after reports that detained Uyghur Muslim workers are being forced to make clothing. It’s alleged some workers are “handcuffed and shackled.”

The story, broken by Australian news outlet Four Corners, alleges forced labour is being carried out at garment producer Urumqi Shengshi Huaer Culture Technology Co., sparking fears that these cases of malpractice continue to loom over the Chinese region, this after it was reported late last year that US brand Badger Sportswear sourced its garments from internment camps in Xinjiang.
