TOKYO - Japanese fastener manufacturer YKK has received the 2019 Good Design Best 100 award from the Japan Design Promotion Association for a zip made from plant-based polyester.
The GreenRise zipper is made with plant-derived polyester made from sugarcane molasses, a by-product of the sugar production process, instead of conventional petroleum-based polyester.
YKK says the product reduces fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in the product cycle, while giving new life to non-consumable sugar.
