DHAKA - The International Development Organisation (IDO) fears the impact of Bangladesh's garment industry on the country's water supplies is becoming "alarming" despite policies put in place to protect them.

The use of groundwater for textile dyeing and other industry practices is a cause for concern in Bangladesh where the industry remains the country’s key export earner generating 80.7 per cent of the total export earnings and 12.36 per cent of GDP.

Zahid Hossain Firoz, programme specialist at the IDO, told Ecotextile News that further steps were needed to improve what he sees as unnecessary industry practice on water use and consumption.
