WASHINGTON – A new study conducted by the Fair Labor Association (FLA) has uncovered disparities in the maternity rights of women in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector.
Findings from anonymous interviews with 88 female workers spanning the country’s apparel industry are indicative of a lack of awareness, law enforcement and provision of childcare for expecting and new mothers in the country.
“The study authors documented instances where day-care centres are non-existent or are being used improperly. A few factories comply with the law, others do not,” the study’s author says. It goes further with recommendations to organise awareness campaigns, provide training and educate both workers and factory bosses of appropriate corrective actions.
