SYDNEY – Global animal protection organisation Four Paws has released a new guidebook which it hopes will encourage brands to distance themselves from using mulesed wool.

The guidebook, Transitioning away from mulesed sheep wool, details alternatives to the controversial practice with case studies from Australian wool producers and brands committed to eliminating mulesing – a process which entails the removal of wool-bearing skin from sheep to prevent parasitic infection.

Jessica Medcalf, Four Paws Australia’s head of programmes, was at the recent Textile Exchange conference in Vancouver and gauged feedback from industry. “It’s clear from our conversations that brands are very concerned about the impact of mulesed wool - not only from an animal welfare perspective, but for the reputation of their own brands and ultimately, risks to investor interest,” she said.
