AHMEDABAD - Workers' rights campaigners and trade union leaders are calling for urgent action to avoid a repetition of the recent denim factory fire in the Indian city of Ahmedabad in which at least seven workers lost their lives.

The Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC), which works to improve conditions for workers in the global garments industry, quotes local media reports which blamed the death toll on safety defects at the Nandan Denim plant.

The fire broke out in the first floor 'shirting' department, on the first floor of the two-storey factory, where over 60 employees were working in an area accessible via only a single ladder, according to police.
