PORT SAID - Garment workers in Egypt are being forced to choose between their health and their livelihoods with many factories staying open without measures to protect staff from the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Amnesty International.
The human rights NGO says thousands of workers in the cities of Port Said and Ismailia are at risk of losing their jobs, having their incomes slashed or being made to work without protective equipment.
Amnesty says business owners have been publicly pressuring the government to keep businesses open, but many do not appear to have addressed workers’ concerns over their safety and livelihoods.
