HAMBURG - Demand for sustainably grown cotton from Africa increased by more than 21 per cent last year, according to new figures from the Cotton Made in Africa (CMiA) initiative.

CMiA, which works to improve living conditions for cotton farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa, protect the environment and create transparency in the textile supply chain, says production also increased.

Nearly 900,000 smallholders in 11 African countries – Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia – were growing cotton according to the CmiA standards in 2019, the report reveals.
