DHAKA - Garment workers whose factories are closed because of the coronavirus pandemic in Bangladesh are to lose 40 per cent of their wages for April, the government has announced.

State minister for labour Monnujan Sufian said the workers of the country's garment factories, which were closed in April due to the government lockdown, would get 60 per cent of their gross monthly wages for the closure period.

The announcement, which following a meeting with factory owners and trade unions in the capital, Dhaka, and came as garment workers continued to stage protests demanding unpaid wage arrears, was condemned by some union leaders.
