SYDNEY - The Australian cotton industry’s second five-year sustainability report reveals substantial reductions in the use of water and pesticides - but an increase in carbon emissions.

The 2019 Australian Cotton Sustainability Report reveals that the use of water reduced by 9.4 per cent while pesticide use was down 18.2 per cent between 2014 and 2019.

However, carbon emissions increased by 12.6 per cent over the same time scale, mainly due to increased use of nitrogen fertiliser. The amount of carbon stored on farms is not currently measured.
