BENGALURU – The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) has urged the country’s government to consider imposing a levy on garment imports, in a move that it’s hoped would create a level-playing field for domestic manufacturers trying to recover post-pandemic.

The CMAI represents a raft of the country’s garment manufacturers, including a number of leading firms such as Arvind and Aditya Birla, and has estimated that the ramifications of the COVID-19 outbreak could lead to a 40 per cent drop in demand due to lockdown restrictions and less demand.
