DHAKA - Garment factories which have reopened in Bangladesh despite the pandemic are running at only 55 per cent capacity because of cancelled orders with further redundancies inevitable.

That is the warning of Rubana Huq, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), who says brands and retailers have now cancelled US$3.15 billion or orders since the pandemic began.

Huq said that the apparel sector in Bangladesh could lose as much as US$5 billion due to the slump triggered by the global coronavirus pandemic with future orders also expected to be much lower than anticipated.
