DHAKA - Garment factory owners in Bangladesh are being urged to stop laying off workers during the coronavirus pandemic after nearly 18,000 reportedly lost their jobs in two weeks despite an agreement to avoid sackings.
The government's Department of Inspection of Factories and Establishments (DIFE) says 67 factories have sacked a total of 17,579 apparel workers since Eid-ul-Fitr on May 24, despite a tripartite agreement not to layoff workers.
