PHNOM PENH – A collective of 14 major trade unions in Cambodia has submitted a petition to the country’s labour ministry, urging that it rescinds its decision to allow factory bosses to withhold annual seniority indemnity pay until 2021.

Earlier this month, the ministry faced backlash after pausing this requirement of companies, which it said would ease the financial pressures they’ve faced in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

In its letter, the coalition of unions – which includes the Collective Union Movement of Workers (CUMW), Cambodian Labor Confederation and Cambodian Trade Union Federation – has expressed its concerns of the effects withheld payments will undoubtedly have on already cash-strapped workers.
