WASHINGTON – The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) has written to the US Federal Trade Commission urging that it provides a timely update to its decades-old product labelling regulations to better leverage digital solutions.

“Technology is now available, and being actively deployed in the commercial marketplace, to move this regulatory and legislatively required information to a digital platform,” the association writes. “Unfortunately, the regulatory framework still mandates this information also be physically present, by being permanently attached to the product or packaging (in some cases) as well.”

With such a shift, the AAFA says consumer experiences could be improved by making product-specific details more readily-available to the tech-savvy consumers of today. What’s more, it says scrapping product labelling would reduce the environmental impact of apparel manufacturers, brands and retailers.
