CLERMONT-FERRAND – French bioplastics firm Carbios has started to build its new demonstration facility in Lyon, which will use enzymes to break down and recycle waste plastics that's then turned into 'virgin-grade' polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for use in bottles, packaging or recycled polyester fibres.

The first phase of the new operation is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2021, which will enable it to document the complete engineering process, from waste to monomers, as it looks to construct and implement the first industrial unit for a licensee with an estimated capacity between 50 and 100 kt of polymer per year.
