CHATTOGRAM – The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has established a new 50-bed hospital in the export processing zone of Saltgola in Chattogram.

The facility will be used to treat garment workers infected by COVID-19, and has been introduced as a precautionary measure due to an influx of returning factory staff in Bangladesh’s densely populated cities.

Figures from the BGMEA’s latest round of testing shows just shy of 350 workers have tested positive for the virus, and 202 have since recovered. The IndustriALL Bangladesh Council isn’t convinced by the accuracy of these numbers though, saying “it’s quite unbelievable” that they’d be this low, given that most factories are “flouting healthcare guidelines”.
