BERKELEY - Global multi-stakeholder initiatives - including those in the apparel industry - are failing to effectively detect and remedy human rights abuses, according to the conclusions of a decade-long research project.

The MSI Integrity human rights group studied projects including the Better Cotton Initiative, Ethical Trading Initiative, Fair Labor Association, Fairtrade International, Fair Wear Foundation, Forest Stewardship Council, GoodWeave International and Rainforest Alliance.

It says the projects, which involve some of the world’s largest multinational corporations, governments, and civil society organisations, are failing in their goal of establishing effective mechanisms to protect against human rights abuses by corporations.
