DHAKA - Around 325,000 garment workers have lost their jobs and more than 1,900 factories closed their doors since March in Bangladesh because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new report.

However, the study by the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) was challenged by the Bangaldesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Assocation (BGMEA) which said the figures were outdated.

The study, entitled 'Covid-19: Decent Work in Readymade Garment Sector', also found that 80 per cent of workers had no savings, and that more than a quarter had been forced to cut back on food during the pandemic.
