CALIFORNIA – US apparel brand Outerknown has vowed to eliminate plastic polybags from its operations, and says all its suppliers will switch to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified tissue bags by the end of next year.

To achieve this, the company has partnered with recyclable packaging solutions specialist Vela, whose FSC-certified bags are carbon neutral and more easily recycled than plastic polybags.

“An estimated 180 billion polybags are produced every year for the fashion industry, and less than 15 per cent are gathered for recycling. If we continue down this path, by 2050 there will be more plastic in our ocean than fish [by weight] … so we’re changing course,” a company statement reads.
