AFRICA – The number of countries now growing genetically-modified (GM) crops such a cotton and maize in Africa has doubled since 2018, new figures show.
Ethiopia, Malawi and Nigeria have joined South Africa, Sudan and Eswatini in adopting a biotechnological approach to reduce the risks that pests and a sporadic climate pose to crops.
Research also suggests that Kenya has approved the cultivation of Bt cotton and may soon join this growing cohort of nations. One Kenyan cotton farmer said: “Bt cotton presents me with a golden opportunity to provide for my family and secure the future of my children.”
