COPENHAGEN – Business consultancy BSR, which is behind the women’s empowerment initiative HERproject, has surveyed more than 1,000 garment workers across Bangladesh, China, India, Vietnam and Egypt to determine the extent to which COVID-19 has impacted their lives.

The subsequent report, titled: ‘I can hardly sustain my family – understanding the human cost of the COVID-19 pandemic for workers in the supply chain’, highlights how workers in some of Asia’s key apparel manufacturing hubs have struggled throughout the course of 2020, both financially and physically.

Figures demonstrate that reduced worker incomes have caused many to sacrifice their food expenses, whilst there’s been a rise in gender-based discrimination and mental health issues.
