PERTH – Australian textile innovator Nanollose and Birla Cellulose, of the cellulosic fibre manufacturing conglomerate Aditya Birla, have filed a joint patent application for the production of high tenacity lyocell made using microbial cellulose.
It’s a landmark moment for the pair, which forged an exclusive partnership almost a year ago to develop and scale Nanollose’s ‘tree-free’ Nullarbor fibre production.
The patent application, entitled High Tenacity Lyocell Fibres from Bacterial Cellulose and Method of Preparation Thereof, is believed to represent a major advancement over Nanollose’s previous iterations of Nullarbor, and has been described as being finer than silk and significantly stronger than conventional lyocell.
