DHAKA - More than a third of a million garment workers have lost their jobs in Bangladesh so far during the coronavirus pandemic with most companies failing to properly compensate laid-off employees, according to a new report.

A significant number of those laid off were later re-employed but on reduced pay and conditions, according to the study, entitled ‘Vulnerability, Resilience and Recovery in the RMG Sector in View of COVID Pandemic: Findings from the Enterprise Survey’.

Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) research director Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem said researchers had surveyed 610 people who had worked at 3,211 listed factories in four major industrial clusters – Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chattogram - during October and November.
