BRUSSELS - The European Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs has backed proposals for a new EU law which would require companies to comply with human rights and environmental standards within their value chains.

Members of the European Parliament (MEPS) on the committee also called for additional measures, including import bans on products linked to severe human rights violations such as forced or child labour, to be made part of trade agreements.

That would impact on brands and retailers sourcing from suppliers implicated in issues such as forced labour in the cotton industry of China's Xinjiang region.
