VANCOUVER – Industry non-profit Textile Exchange has teamed up with the United Nations Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action to launch a new initiative set on rapidly boosting the uptake of recycled polyester (rPET) by fashion brands and retailers within the next five years.

The pair’s 2025 Recycled Polyester Challenge has set the ambitious target of increasing the apparel industry’s use of the material from 14 per cent to 45 per cent in the coming years.

Brands which pledge their support to the initiative will be required to annually report their polyester consumption to Textile Exchange’s Corporate Fiber and Materials Benchmark (CFMB) survey. The Vancouver-based NGO said: “We encourage the industry to participate in catalysing change with this joint commitment.”
