NORTHAMPTON - The Leather Working Group (LWG) trade body has released the seventh version of its flagship environmental certification featuring new social, traceability and chemical management requirements.

The LWG Environmental Audit Protocol has been renamed as the LWG Leather Manufacturer Audit Protocol to reflect the expansion of its scope to include full integration of chemical management, scoring for traceability of raw materials, increased requirements to manage deforestation risk, and social auditing.

Covering about a quarter of global finished leather production, and with over 680 leather manufacturers under LWG-certification, the Leather Working Group claims to represent the largest network of environmentally-audited tanneries across the globe.
