LONDON – The UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has launched a ‘call for evidence’ on animal fur’s use in fashion, as it looks to gauge the thoughts of both stakeholders and consumers in order to “inform future government policy”.
It’s said to be part of plans to tighten animal welfare standards following Brexit, with Environment secretary George Eustice saying, “we are now able to re-examine some of our animal welfare laws, including the import of fur for use in fashion products”.
Animal rights organisation Humane Society International/UK (HSI) says it warmly welcomes the government’s decision and has urged consumers to “make their voices heard” if they’re to influence a nationwide ban.
